Britten Sinfonia Ensemble: Charles Daniels tenor, Nicholas Daniel oboe, Julius Drake piano

John Tavener was moved by the devasting 2004 tsunami to write Songs of the Sky, a song cycle for tenor, oboe and piano which sets Zen Buddhist, American Indian and Hindu texts.  Oboist Nicholas Daniel was "absolutely speechless at the scale and breadth of the music and its lyrical power".

Nicholas's coruscating talents will also be on show in oboe sonatas by Bach and Rubbra.

Although best known for opera Benjamin Britten is one of the finest song-writers.  His charming, lyrical and beautifully-crafted Winter Words cycle sets eight Thomas Hardy poems.  Two of his Purcell song arrangements are also included. Three of Vaughan Williams's Blake Songs continue the English lyrical mood.

Britten Sinfonia has built a reputation for fearless programming matched by peerless playing. They won the ensemble prize at this year's RPS Music Awards.

We are extremely fortunate to have the three fine artists who premiered this Tavener cycle earlier in the year.
