BINCHOIS CONSORT: Andrew Kirkman conductor, David Martin and Matthew Venner alto, George Pooley, Edwin Simpson, Matthew Vine tenor, Jonathan Sells bass

This programme presents little-known but astonishingly beautiful choral music from the late 15th and early 16th centuries.  The centrepiece is the great Mass Libenter gloriabor, a neglected masterpiece by the extraordinary Flemish composer Jacob Obrecht, and a work of great sonority and power.

The Consort will also sing rarely-heard masterpieces of remarkable beauty and potency by Agricola, Compère, Mouton, Brumel and Willaert, climaxing in Heinrich Isaac's resplendent and joyous setting of the Regina coeli.

The Binchois Consort are ideal interpreters of this music, David Fallowes praised their “immaculate balance, wonderfully free phrasing, and crystalline clarity”. Their 7 CDs have won a large clutch of awards – including a Diapason d’Or and a Gramophone Early Music Award.

“This is music of spellbinding beauty, and Kirkman's team deliver it superbly” (The Times)

“The Binchois Consort are the quintessence of medieval restraint and discipline…  Kirkman’s performances glint with cutting-edge scholarship” (Simon Heighes)

Conductor Andrew Kirkman founded the group in 1995. He is Associate Professor in music at Rutgers University, New Jersey, specialising in sacred music of the 15th and 16th centuries.
