ASKEW SISTERS: Emily Askew fiddle, cello, vocals
Hazel Askew melodeon, vocals
The Askew Sisters will bring what fRoots magazine called their “infectious pumping
energy” and sheer enjoyment to a variety of traditional English folk music and song.
Foot-tapping dance tunes on melodeon and fiddle (ranging from Playford’s 17th century
collections to morris and folk dance tunes), mix with traditional songs and ballads
– many of them from the collections that Ralph Vaughan Williams, Cecil Sharp and
others gathered from people still singing in the oral tradition.
Emily and Hazel, a young classically-trained (and multi-talented) duo, are making
waves on the folk circuit. Emily began with cello, recorder and piano, but learned
the fiddle as her interest in folk music grew. She now studies early music at the
Guildhall, where she’s learning the medieval fiddle and baroque oboe. Hazel started
with flute, harp and piano but then taught herself the melodeon and took up singing.
She enjoys researching old ballads and songs.
“Hazel's rich gutsy voice and inventive melodeon playing combined with the skill
of Emily's singing fiddle or soulful cello are a new force to be reckoned with!”
