SAVÂDI…:  Kristine Jaunalskne, Ulrike Hofbauer sopranos,

Marie Bournisien harp

‘Fabellae’ means ‘little stories’ (fables) in Latin. The stories we tell ourselves are part of our cultural identity, and mould our thinking and values. All the pieces Savâdi perform in this programme tell their own tales – sacred and secular stories expressed through Italian music of the first half of the 17th century by Carissimi, Strozzi, d'India and others.

In this exciting period composers followed Monteverdi in seeking new ways of expressing texts in music to ‘move the passions of the soul’.

In 2006 Savâdi… gave the Festival a memorable recital of love songs from Monteverdi’s Italy, making ravishing sounds with their two sopranos and harp.

When they won the 2003 Early Music Network International Young Artists’ Competition in York one of the judges said, “Savâdi's performance of Italian early 17th-century repertoire was arresting by its intensity and polish. Their subtle movements and gestures enhanced the communication of the emotional content of the music and the whole presentation was both entertaining and moving”. In 2004 they won the Van Wassenaer Concours prize: “All the other ensembles were bigger and produced more notes. But the two singers and the harpist gloriously won the first prize”.
