Bach walked the ancient Salt Road between Lüneburg and Lübeck on his way to meet Buxtehude in 1705 and the music of these two towns is celebrated here in an evocative fusion of music and poetry, and of journeys real and imagined.
Bach was only 20 and at the start of his career when he made the pilgrimage but the four months he spent in the master’s company ensured the continuation of the Protestant baroque music tradition begun in the previous century. The other composers in the programme form part of that tradition and their music would have been in the young composer’s head while he walked.
Established and directed by cornetto player Gawain Glenton, In Echo is a diverse ensemble that explores the rich repertoires of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Specialising in Renaissance and Baroque music, the ensemble also commissions and performs new music for old instruments.
