The Mellstock Band invite you to join them in their own gleeful celebration of dance, drink and general misbehaviour as carried on at Christmas in many villages until about a hundred years ago – and not forgetting some necessary and sobering admonitions from puritans, parsons and angels.
Alongside the revelry are convivial harmony songs, rousing dance music, William Barnes’ and Thomas Hardy’s poetry set to local tunes, carols dedicated to bellringing and cider, glees from the singing-masters, and – last but not least – the Devil’s own tunes.
The Mellstock Band have appeared in many TV dramas – Pride and Prejudice, Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the d’Urbervilles and The Way We Live Now among them – and featured in productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chichester Festival Theatre and The Royal National Theatre. Their albums have become standard works of reference for traditional music and song of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
“you are transported back to the time of Hardy and Dickens...” Tony Kendall, Living Tradition
